
I think adversity has been a gift to me. I think the colour of my skin, being a black woman, that is a gift. First of all, I love the colour of my skin and the colour of my people, but with this comes adversity. With this comes doors that had been slammed in my face constantly, even as a model back in my modelling days. I’d say, almost every single day I heard “You can’t do this fashion show because you’re black”, “You can’t do that magazine spread because you’re black”, “You can’t have this contract, modelling contract, because you’re black”, “You can’t be on the cover of a magazine because you’re black”. Of course they get you down but for some reason there’s something inside of me that goes “You say I can’t? Really? Watch me”.
